Root Chakra – Red
The Root Chakra is located at the base of the spine. Also known as the sacral plexus it is related to the element of the earth. The Root speaks about our physical self and needs. Many body systems/parts are said to be affected by the Root chakra. When thinking about the root chakra, think about the things in/of your body required to survive. We can live without our gall bladders, but when they malfunction it can be disruptive to the whole body system. Other very important parts of the body are best aligned working with the Root Chakra. Of course, the lumbar region of the spine (close to where the Charka is located), teeth and bones, kidneys and gall bladder, sweat glands, the ankles and the knees are all affected by the Root Chakra. The Root Chakra is most often represented as being red. Further understanding of the Root Chakra can be found in studying the Zodiac signs of Capricorn and Aquarius.
This Chakra is said to be aligned with the metal lead. Ruled by the planet Saturn, long range effects can come from working with (or, negatively – ignoring) the Root Chakra
If you feel like you’re having difficulty connecting or remaining solid within yourself, working with the Root Chakra is said to help stabilize. An easy exercise is to sit on the floor (a chair is okay if the floor is difficult for you). Close your eyes and focus not on the skin, not on the muscles, but on the essence of you that resides in the Root Chakra. Chakras are considered to be locations in our astral essence that we can connect with from the physical plane.
A friend describes how she connects with her Root Chakra this way. “I sit on the floor and wrap my arms around my knees. I usually burn a red candle – helps me to remember to focus on the Red Chakra (also known as the Root or Sacral Chakra). Then I close my eyes and slowly rock backward and forward on my butt. While I’m rocking I focus on the part of my body that remains in contact with the ground. Once I’ve really got a good focus going, I focus on the color red and imagine positive energy, earth energy, coming up through the floor. Normally after I do this I feel much more stabilized and stronger within myself.” Well, when she told me about this, I thought it was a little kooky – 20 years ago. After a particularly bad day I gave it a try. WOW! I couldn’t believe it. It took less than five minutes and I felt better than I had all week.
The basic message of the Root Chakra is to maintain the inner workings of your physical body as you nurture your spirit. Helping to keep your Chakras in proper alignment through meditation is a great way to take more control of your health and your life.
