The vignette we see in the Five of Swords speaks loudly of its meaning. Angry, determined, and incautious to the words of others the masculine force is ready to erupt. Although his mate and partner begs him not to use his force, and even physically tries to hold him back, he is determination personified.
The position of the woman is where the power and meaning of this card lies. She is defeated in her hopes to speak words he will hear. She is on her knees in a supplicating position hoping to reach him. He ignores her and is ready to fight. But what good is a fight without honor. The sword is unsheathed, at the ready. His stance is not guarded but forceful and challenging. The stormy sky is emblematic of the obvious emotions surging through both figures on the card.
