Four is ruled by the Emperor of the Major Arcana. He lends his stability to the Four. (Think about it this way…four legs sure give good strength and foundation to a table, don’t they?)The Four is also the number of will and determination. The Four grants practicality and the application of the self to the matter. This creates a nearly unbeatable combination. Symbolically, the Four stands for equality and evenness. It has a direct correlation to the Christian Cross. Fours talk about the practicality and focus. If there is an abundance of Fours in your spread it may indicate you either need to apply your will in better application, or the contra-indicator could be that you aren’t using your gifts and focus to create the life you want for yourself!
The Kabalistic Link to the 4 – Chesed, Mercy, and Majesty. We can call Chokmah the “all-better” in the abstract and Chesed the same power in a more concrete form as the loving father, preserver and protector. All the creative work in the world is done by people whose minds work in terms of Chesed the King, seated at his throne and holding both scepter and orb. He is the benevolent ruler who also guides his people. This idea is symbolized in Tarot Key 4, the Emperor. He has become master of the world of abstract ideas and can select images to fit his purpose and bring them down into the concrete plane of Malkuth.
